Wet Behind The Ears
Wet Behind The Ears

Hi everyone!

I simply don't get it. I have to ask my doctor about this, I know, but thought I'd ask you all what you thought and see if this happens to you.

I just started a vigorous walking program at 6am in the morning. Only 1/2 an hour per morning at this point, but it's 6 days per week and I love it. I normally wake up with a reading of about 6.2 (I'm Canadian. I believe that's about 111.6 US?). I have a drink of water, and head out the door. When I get home my reading was at 8.4 (151.2)! I tested it again at 10am and sure enough it was sitting at 8.2 My readings by 10am WITHOUT exercise usually hover around 6.1 or 5.9.

I'm stumped. It's the strangest thing! I'm sure that exercising is good for me and goodness knows I could use it (yes, trying to lose weight), so why would it be higher?

Could it be that I need to eat something before I walk?

Anyone else encounter this?

Thanks!

Katie

Exercise is always good for diabetes. think first of all you should concern your doctor about this and continue with you exercise. Hope, it will take some time for showing the results.

I've just been newly diagnosed so tips from the Diabetic classes are still relatively fresh in mind.

Apparently during the night your liver can put out sugars into the blood stream as it detects a need. That is why some find their BS elevated when they first get up. Someone suggested eating a small amount of protein/carb before bed to keep the BS level throughout the night.

If you are exercising first thing in the morning without breakfast your liver might be putting out the sugars to give you the energy. Why not try eating something small before you start out. See how this affects your BS level.

I am type II diabetic and run daily up to 20K, congrats at getting out there and exercising. More people should be exercising diabetic or not. So do not get discouraged by the fact that your blood sugar spikes up during exercise.

First, are you checking your blood sugar before bed? If you are waking up with a BS over 6 chances are you are going to bed with higher then normal BS. So first I would work on getting your BS into the 4.5 to 5.5 range before bed. BS does not change much between the time you go to bed and wake up.

Your liver will dump in the morning if it perceives you need sugar. So try a ½ cup of low fat yogurt or even a Rice cake with peanut butter on it before heading out the door. I find that once I get moving my BS will start to be used very quickly in the morning so there tends to be a faster drop in the mornings then other times of the day.

Also I do not skip out the door to run I generally give myself a ½ hour to 1 hour before setting out. This allows for the body to wake up and start functionally normally. So I might suggest giving your self a bit of time before exercising in the morning just to let the body ramp up into the normal functions.

This may sound funny but you could be stressing the body into the Fight or Flight mode. If your body is being stressed the liver will dump sugars into the blood stream. So by getting up strapping on the running shoes and heading out the door, your body may tricked into thinking there is a need for an extra boost of energy. So give yourself that ½ hour to read the paper have a small meal. Then go out and walk.

Harry

Yikes! That couldn't be further from the truth! But Harry has some really awesome points there: the liver does get easily tricked into thinking it's fight or flight time. It's just that non diabetic pancreas' make up for that fact by producing more insulin. And also that diabetics exercising on an empty stomach is not really a good idea.
But my question is why isn't the exercise discussion area more up-to-date? Come on people! If we're all taking care of our diabetes - which I think we are or we wouldn't be here - then we gotta get out there and exercise!
