When you start a low carb foods list, the first thin you should do is make categories for simple and complex carbohydrates. Only rarely will you be using simple carbohydrate foods when you are following a low carb eating plan; the small amounts of carbs which you are allowed should come almost entirely in the form of complex carbohydrates.

The most prominent foods on your low carb foods list, of course, will be high protein foods like meat, poultry, fish and seafood, eggs, cheese, seeds, and nuts. You’ll also have fats like butter, olive and other vegetable oil, and cream, but nutritionists agree that monosaturated oils like olive oil are the best for us. And even though you may be under the impression that a low carb diet gives you carte blanches to eat as much protein and fat as you like, overdoing either of them will lead to weight gain and other health problems.

hello,
The term low carb was coined in 1992 when the USDA recommended Americans to include six servings of grains and starches in their daily diet. But low carb diets dates back to 1864. There was a 'letter of corpulence', a pamphlet written by William Banting which talked about a low carb diet. It gave way to other low carb diets later of which the most popular was Atkins. People also accepted the Scarsdale diet. In 1970's most people tried these diets to escape the haunting problems related to obesity. Scarsdale had a 14-day meal plan where as Atkins diet was an unlimited calorie intake diet in the form of fat and proteins with limited carbs.

People gradually realized the importance of weight loss and health benefits. Too much of refined carbohydrates leads to overproduction of insulin. It results in fat storage. And this fat gets prominent around the middle. So, insulin produces a negative effect on our system. And in this fast-paced world, we do have a solution to this growing problem related to obesity or weight gain.

I am planning on starting a low carb diet. Heading to the doctor next week and a RD the next day.
Last month my blood test were all good and have lost 16 pounds since August.

Any suggests on a low carb diet? What to look for or look out for?

Thanks for any help or suggestions

I can't believe nobody's responded to your post, Thomas! What did your RD suggest? Mine suggested a well-balanced low fat high fiber meal and snack plan, and showed me how to control carbs with carb-counting. It gradually evolved into what I now eat, which is mostly whole, fresh, plain and natural foods in small portions, balanced with exercise and keeping an eye on blood sugar results.

T2 dx 7/98 - diet + Exercise 11 years (walking, biking, elliptical, resistance moves 15-20 minutes between meals 3 times a day) - no meds until 500mg Glucophage XR every other day summer '09 - A1cs mostly in 6s
