my husband is a diabetic type 1...and hes not taking care of himself. he only takes his long acting insulin not his fast acting insulin..and eats almost whatever..he mentioned to me last night that hes been high and low alot during the past few months. so now im scared, i know i cant force or push him to take care of himself or get an insulin pump since it makes things worse..but as his wife..what can i do? im still confused and unsure what ok to cook for him..can anyone give me even just a one day example of what a diabetic type1 should be eating?..and any other advice of things that i CAN do?

If you're trying to control his diet and he is not taking any short acting insulin at all, my recommendation would be no refined carbohydrates whatsoever. He should only be eating fruits, vegetables, some root vegetables, seeds, nuts, some meat, and some dairy. Also use lots of cinnamon and pepper in your cooking. Coffee also can help lower sugar in the mornings. If you kind of stick to a south beach life style, he won't really have to worry as much about short acting insulin. No junk food and nothing packaged. Hope this helps.

If your husband is not taking any short acting insulin that I would say that he should avoid ALL carbohydrates; including most kinds of fruits. I will say that missing a major food group is not the healthiest thing in the world to do though.

My advice would be to seek professional help to get the education needed for diabetes. I would recommend that you both get this together.

Without this your husband is likely to get swinging BGs which causes bad mood swings. These swings won't be helping his denial of the condition and you have my greatest sympathy. I know from my own bitter experiences how hard it can be for my wife to live with me when I go through a patch of mood swings.

Don't forget that this is a massive change for him, but the sooner he can accept it and make a few changes the better he will feel.

Good luck,
Mark

wow, ok, thank you guys soo much. yea..so far the only thing i can do is give him the right foods and i'm glad there's at least something i can do! but sadly, right now we're broke for like 4 weeks and i could only afford box dinners...which has lots of carbs...so that is really bad for him??? that sucks...lately hes been getting worse and that makes sense. hes been waking up with lows and having highs throughout the day and im very, very worried about him....quick question my husband loves an egg sandwich in the morning on wheat...is wheat ok or is that still considered bad carbs for him??

Wheat bread is the very best for him! There are a lot of pretty low carb wheat breads on the market, so read the labels. In fact, good idea to read the labels on most everything! And go for those lowest in carbs. Good luck.

wheat is better than white, but some wheats are better than others. Definitely read the labels. If you can get your hands on those flaxseed wraps with only 5 grams of carbs that's even better. Otherwise, some foods that help lower blood sugar are coffee, asparagus, and maybe buy him some cinnamon supplements. It's about $7 for a huge can of them and they'll last you for some time. Also, if you have to go with box food, try eating beans or corn instead of pasta or other refined carbohydrates. Those won't spike his sugar as much. Good luck!
