hi
my son was diagnoised when he was 9.
there are times when he just doesnt want to eat so adjust the insulin to the carb or no carb intake... corys going through a phase now where the continual high sugar readings is making him nauseated and at times causes him to vomit.. if you read my profile it will give you more insight to whats happening here..im going to try something new in hopes it works & thats smaller portions ate throughout the day..mini meals/snacks although i know thats difficult to do when the guys are at school.. sigh it really is tough for him at times.. hope this helps. xox

HI I my daughter was diagnosed when she in 05 she is 6 now. she used to be low all the time but we switched her medicine to lantus and novolog and she is doing alot better with not having lows at this time. not to say they dont happen just alot less since she was on nph. she takes injections everytime she eats. We count carbs for her. the lantus is long acting insulin its given every 24hrs. and his body will go thru the honeymoon phase hers lasted about a yr where her body was still making insulin and we were giving her insulin also. so that might be causing some of your sons lows too. as for him not eating my daughter usually doesnt eat when she is high. and i dont force her to eat. but if he is on insulin where he gets it half hour before eating. we found with my daughter that we give hers after she eats to see what she eats and adjust it from there. if there is anything u want to ask me feel free to email me at juliehauser@comcast.net
I hoped some of this will help you!! best of luck

Hello,
How are you all doing?
My daughter was 9 1/2
,now 10,she has 5 units of Lantus every morning also, plus after she eats she tests her b.s. and has her units,15 carbs for every unit of novolog. She also tests when she feels shakey and when she gets hungry, she will eat,and test again. If she goes over, she will have more insulin. But we are still learning the limations to everything and self control, and smaller portions.
My daughter,Janie lost 30 lbs. in 2 1/2 months before the doctors knew what it was.
We NEVER want the B.S to go to low!!! It's a worry, but children learn to deal better than we do, I think it's harder on the parent.
Janie gives her own shots in her stomach, she had to learn that before we left the hospital.
God Bless,Keep in touch,Bless the Children, for they are stronger than us sometimes.
best,lisa

Hello,
I know it's hard, but don't ever let your child's B.S. go low if you can help it. I know it's new, frightening, but keep always checking your child's B.S. every 4 to 5 hours. Your child can always eat normal, just in small portions,i Know it's hard at first. Just be careful of foods that contain sugar~regular.
I have learned a new way of cooking, whenever the recipes call for sugar, WE USE SPLENDA IN EVERYTHING NOW! And it's not bad.
So,remember, don't deprive your child of food, I did at first,But,I'm not no more.Just remember the portion sizes, and drink lots of water so the child doesn't get dehydrated. This is very important as insulin.
My daughter's skin was drying out so bad, she washes her hands and follows up with Eucerin plus intensive repair hand cream. The insulin dries the skin out.
The sweets is what I really watch out for her. A child is young, even though they are still learning themselves , as much as we are, challenge is the word for diabetic type 1 in our children, our children learn what they can or can't really have to much of.
The fear of our children going into convulsions of b.s being to low, I'd rather have my child's b.s. to high than to low, insulin can always bring it down,to low can cause convulsions and brain damage,if glugogon is not admistrated properly,a.s.a.p.,followed with 4 oz. of orange juice and peanut butter crackers, is definte a survival of b.s. lower than 50.
take care, god bless,Praying a cure by the F.D.A. is soon on the way, the antidot cures mice, according to the studies out of Harvard University.amen!
keep in touch,best,lisa and janie

Hi there. Welcome to the forum. I'm new to all this too. Know that you are not alone! This is definitely the place to go. I am the granddaughter of a diabetic and I am learning as much as I can to help my grandparents.

I also have children and getting them to eat the right foods (whether they have diabetes or not) can be a real challenge. I know there are tons of creative ways to get kids to eat. I'll hunt around see what I can find for you!
