Help! I'm having an awful week!

Just been diagnosed diabetic and I was so worried about injecting Insulin - I have a terrible needle phobia. I have thrown myself into exercise and diet to try and prevent this.

I was just starting to feel positive when my doctor rang.
Well... now it seems I have to inject Lovanox instead to prevent blood clots!

Does anyone here have any experience/advice with this? I've heard it stings a lot...?
How did you manage to inject yourself?

Any advice hugely appreciated.

Cris

Wet Behind The Ears
Wet Behind The Ears

Cris,
Don't panic just yet. I am having my second child and with this and my last I was on Lovanox, simply because close to 6 years ago I had a blood clot behind my left knee.
I also am on an insulin pump but of course am very well familiar with regular insulin injections.
Lovanox is very painful I will not lie to you. It burns/stings the whole time the Meds are entering in through the injection. My husband gives me the shots at night before bed and we have learned a couple tricks:
first-place an ice pack on your thigh for a few minutes before giving the injection (your thigh also hurts a lot less than your arm). The ice numbs the area well.
second-inject the lovanox as slowly as you can. If you inject fast the Meds have no where to go right away and they sit there and create a huge bump and certainly a bruise as well.
Then either rub or put the ice back on after the injection. Rubbing seems to move the Meds around so it doesn't just sit there in one area and the ice, again, numbs very well.
I hope I helped. Its not fun but you can make it. Also if you are pregnant and have to take Lovanox just think..after you deliver your precious baby you can stop the injections!!!
Rachel
