I am a 6'2" 228lb 33yr male who was diagnosed with Type2 a week ago.I come from a family with history so it was not a shock, however it was a unsettling to see it come at this age. My GP doctor suggested i lose wt, do exercise and put me on 500mg of metaformin. My fasting BG was 195/200+ when diagnosed. Now a week into exercise (30 min walking mornings) and medication and diet (2200 calories per day) and my BG is around 140-150 in the morning and 170-180 before dinner (i have been told to checkonly twice per day. I dont know why but I wont be comfy till i get it down to 110 While i was depressed somewhat at the initial diagnosis, i now see the brighter side - i am exercising and probably eating healthier! My doc told me to get down to 195lbs . That is daunting, but Its something I am shooting for. If i do achieve that it will be a record for me because i never weighed so less since I was 20! But i see that as part of the goal. I have my own set of problems in nutrition. The list of foods i eat are very limited. I have now cut down on the white rice, but I am unable to give up on my potatos (i eat about6-10oz of stir fried potatos per day before - how can i change this now?) I have to have my fix of potatos every day. I eat only chicken, but eat zero vegetables (other than the stuff they put in burgers). No tomatos, no carrots, no celery etc. zero fruits - i hate em, never had them in life , no yoghurts etc. I have to start my 15min after eating exercise soon and hopefully will get this under control. haveing read the previous posts has been therapautic (sp?). Thanks for the site - its been a real comfort and a motivation for me

This message was edited on Nov-21-06 at 09:32 PM (EST) Hi, Indyzag! Just a quick note on the exercise part, since you're into that (more on food later, or maybe someone else will post, too!). But, just wanted to let you know that splitting-up my exercise into morning, afternoon, and evening walks (or anything else such as steps, stairs, squats, sit-ups, push-ups, biking -- even dumbbells -- doesn't have to be walking, but using the treadmill's my main form of blood sugar control, and I combine with other stuff done on an irregular basis regularly) has really helped keep fasting morning numbers down, as well as around the clock. It's a between-meal method, which works sort of like meds or insulin. At least half of it is at night -- after dinner and/or after evening snack before bed. Well, okay, just one word on potatoes: I started with cutting a plain baked potato in half, gradually cut that down to one third, then one fourth (on which flax seed oil is really good!), and then switched to brown rice. I'm having a few bites of plain baked sweet potato for Thanksgiving. You do what you gotta do. Keep an eye on your meter, and see what works. I found I had to cut back on food portions and increase exercise gradually as I got more fit, the exercise became easier, and I lost 40 pounds (in 6 months), so it's essential to keep up with increased fitness level and new weight. Focusing on fitness has been the key for me (yes, some vegetables, which were also relatively new to me, and which I now not only love, but love what they do for me, have been involved). Your doc should refer you to a Registered Dietician (RD). Mine was a big help to me -- very knowledgable, and very encouraging. Good luck, and I hope you hear from everyone else here on board.T2 dx 7/98 - Diet & Exercise (walking 1 mile 3x/day) - A1c av. low 6's - age 63

Nan,Thanks for the message. I think I will try and substittue chicken for the potatos. Thanks also for the tip on splitting up the exercise. I have started to walk around 15 min after lunch and dinner. Hope it will help. I did hit a low of 105 in BG reading yesterday before dinner - that was a first. Its 139 today morning.

I was diagnosed back in February - same thing. I have a family history but it still took me by surprise. It's sort of a double-edged sword - it forces you to take better care of yourself but that is because you now have a life-long disease. It sounds as though you are doing well with your exercising. Keep working on the diet part - I found that the second level of the South Beach Diet has food selections/amounts that are just about perfect for diabetics.

Greetings and welcome to the board, Changing your lifestyle is never easy, but you sound like you are making the right choices.Next time you do your chicken/potatoe stir fry think about adding small chopped up veggies, Tiny peices almost minced. So small you won't even notice them. Also you may try leafy things like spinach and swiss chard. I am not a big veggie eater, but I do eat a lot of Green Leafy salad, avoid the tasteless stuff like Iceburg and romaine lettuces. The darker the green the better tasting and the more benefits. A lifestyle changes requires a change in thinking. So try making smaller changes to eating. Try adding a bit of fruit to your stir fry, apples are great as well. Just make sure you account for the carb choices. Think outside the box when cooking, I love rice, get the brown long grain, it is slightly higer in Fibre and takes a bit more to digest, The short grain rices will spike your blood sugar very quickly, I will have potatoe, a small baked potatoe is great, and takes longer to digest then mashed potato, keep in mind the more processed the food is the shorter time it takes to get into your blood. so try to keep foods as natural as you can. Best advice, STAY OUT OF THE AISLE at the local grocery mart.

Hi All, I wanted to post an update from my side. Its been just over six months since I was DXed with Type2. I had done a lot to control my type2. I had cut down on food, i no longer gorge myself, I avoid all direct sugars, and i try to fit in some walking once in a while. I had lost 15 pounds over this period . For the first time in ten years, my wt is below 100 kgs (220lbs). At one point of time I was 240lb three years ago. my sugar readings are down in the 105-110 zone with medication and 125-130 without meds. Doc has told me to get down to 195 and he will stop the meds. The doc was also happy that I was able to rein in the readings. Hopefully I will hit that 195lb target in another six months time

One year on Had another blood report done. ****The good news**** My H1Ac is same as six months back - at 6.3 (and down from 8.3 one year ago) My Blood pressure is down and cholestrol is good (about 150 total) I have been doing 3 mile runs for the first time in my life (But only twice or thrice a week). Wt remains the same at 215-216 lbs ****The not so good news **** My daily sugar readings have shown an increase - mostly getting 124-128 range in the mornings. Very rarely have i seen go below 110 and its been months since i have ever seen it go to the 90s. Even when I eat moderately and in control, i never seen it go below 110. Things that I am obviously not doing at this stage, but thought would be a good idea to reitreate those resolutions. 1. Watch the carbs strictly 2. Avoid the fries 3. Light exercise after eating 4. Regular exercise every day (currently I do it alternate days when at best). Wish me luck!

Dear indyzag,The good news is absolutely great, sir. You seem to have done a brilliant job for yourself. The bad news may not be something that you have direct control over, so don't feel so disheartened. It may be that you are becoming more insulin resistant, or it may be that your pancreas simply isn't producing as much insulin. Has your doctor actually reviewed your medication in light of your raised blood sugar levels? It's fairly obvious from your self imposed resolutions that you understand the types of things that will help you. Might I just point out that, from my own experience and frequent blood testing, fries are almost an absolute no-no. At least, they should be taken in moderation, and not too frequently. Apart from the carbohydrate value of potatoes, there's the added constituent of fat to consider. Fat slows down the digestive process, meaning that it takes longer for those carbs to exit your system. Exercise, as I'm sure you're already aware, aids the body to utilise whatever insulin is being produced, and regular exercise maintains that ability. What I would say, sir, is not to see exercise as a chore that you must carry out every day. If you feel like taking time out from exercising, then don't feel guilty about it.Whatever you decide to do, indyzag, I wish you the very best of luck. Be well, sir. Lots of Love and Light. Mick x x x x x x x P.S. Please don't be offended, or alarmed, by the "x's". It's simply a sort of logo that I've used for the past 30-odd years.

If your libary has a copy, take a look at the Glycemic Index. Although not all people have the same reactions to food, RED POTATOES are lower on the index. (Basmatic and Brown rice are as well.) Take your BG readings around eating them, and see if it doesn't make your blood go a little lower. Do you eat legumes? Like peas, beans or the like? do you do even bagged salad. I recommend trying to get in those veggies. They are important to your overall health. One problem diabetics face is heart disease. We are in a very high risk for it, and you need your fiber to help with cholesterol and blood pressure. Has your doctor checked either of those? Diabetics need to be lower than the average person for their cholesterol. Make sure it is good. You need to have your fasting blood sugar below 120 to help with not developing complications. 110 is a nice goal, and you can do it with proper care-which includes diet and exercise. It takes time to lose weight, and to bring down those numbers. Your Ha1c should help tell you where you are on the average, and give you some feedback on how you are doing every 3 months. Good luck.

Congratulations indyzag,You're obviously doing something along the right lines. If you weren't, you'd expect to see your blood sugars rising, rather than falling. I've little doubt that your regular exercise is having a positive effect on combating your insulin resistance. (It has a tendency to make your body's cells more sensitive to the effects of the insulin that you're still producing.) I'll keep my fingers crossed that you hit your below 6.0 HbA1c level at your next appointment. It looks as though you're heading in that general direction anyway. Well done again. Be well, indyzag. Lots of Love and Light. Mick x x x x x x x
