I have completed over two years on Byetta and I have been able to keep my weight down and BG down in the nondiabetic range. I am waiting anxiously for the XR Byetta that is injected once a week. I am also taking metformin, and avandia. So far no issues with the avandia. It has been a very long time since I posted on this forum but it is always good to read some of the current posts. There is a great deal of research going on in the search for a cure for this illness and the internet allows you to follow much of the research on your own. I was a little concerned about the bad rap that avandia was receiving but my endo explained that many of the heart problems that have been developing are within the first year of use and they may have had a heart problem previous to taking the medication. I have been taking avandia for over seven years and it appears to be working well. I hope that everyone here is doing the best they can to maintain normalized BS. My best to all.

Patrick,

Glad to hear your doing so good on the byetta. I just returned to using it, I had to stop it and the lantus because of esophagel spasms and a stricture that would often at most meals wouldn't allow me to swallow food after the first bite. It would stay stuck for as short of time as a few minutes or until the next day. I had that balooned a week ago, for the second time. Just a few of days later I had it stick for hours over the first bites of an orange.

With esophagel spasms, they keep balooning the stricture, over many procedures, until eventually they actually rupture the esophagus and repair it surgically by removing the scarred area and reconnecting the two ends.

I to am taking Avandia and like your Endo I beleive that the only heart related problems associated with it are those that pre-existed.

DR:

Sorry to hear about the strictures. I hope that any surgery that has to be done is successful. It sounds like you have been through quite a bit in this battle with diabetes. I consider myself very fortunate to be at the point I am now. Until researchers come up with a vaccine or cure we will have to work hard at maintaining normal or near normal blood sugars. When I was first diagnosed this forum provided a great deal of support and knowledge that helped me work my way to where I am now. I have created in Google an Alert about Diabetes and related topics so that I can try to stay on top of this illness. My grandmother on my father's side was a diabetic on insulin and my dad was considered a boderline diabetic (that is like being borderline pregnant) My diagnosis should not have been a surprise but it certainly did. I will certainly be back quite a bit more often to this site so that I can say hello more often.

Patrick

My endo recently gave me a prescription for Byetta. I haven't filled it because he said that there has been some research that it has side effects but they are not sure yet. Do you trust the byetta? Or avandia or what? I worry alot about side effects.

girlgonesweet1,

I have had no problems with Byetta. Most doctors start with 5 micrograms before moving you up to The 10 micrograms. This is because it can cause nausea at first. If you decide to go with the Byetta never under any circumstances do you do the shot and then delay eating. I am not a doctor, but in my opinion, the problems they are having with Byetta, I believe, will be found out that the people that had problems either delayed eating after taking the shot or not eating at all.

My doctor didn't stop the Avandia, I take it with the Byetta and Glucophage xr.

I have some disabilities that prevent me from getting the enough exercise, and the Byetta helps.

When I first started on it, my blood glucose A1c was nearly 12 and in the first 3 months after it had dropped to 8 and then down to 6 after that.

I hope this helps.
