I have been on Byetta for six months now and have lost about twenty pounds since I started on the lizard spit. I seem to be doing a great deal of yawning after meals though. I was just wondering who else here has been using Byetta and what if any side effects or results you have obtained? I started on the 5mcg's and that did not affect my appetite very much if at all. But a month after I started on the 10mcg's I could only eat half a sandwich for lunch and sometimes did not eat lunch at all. I was just not hungry. I would be interested in learning more from other people who have been using Byetta for awhile.

Hi, Patrick -- have you seen your doctor to discuss all this, with it having been 6 months? As for half sandwiches, that's all I ever eat, anyway -- sometimes just a quarter if it's a snack, and the rest later for next snack. I try to ignore occasional hungry feelings, as long as I'm getting adequate nutrition. Some deep inhales with arms overhead helps prevent yawning, and makes good exercise warmup, too. (Learned that from Gilad.) http://www.bodiesinmotionwithgilad.com/

2 diet & daily exercise (walking 1+ miles 3-4 times a day totalling 3-4 miles/day occasional biking and resistance training) no meds almost 8 yrs., dx age 55 w/bs 350, no meds after 2 months., 40 pounds lighter after 6 months - A1c av. low 6's

Wet Behind The Ears
Wet Behind The Ears

MY endo put me on Byetta because I could not lose weight. The first month on the 5mcg I lost 9 pounds, didn't have much neausa(sp)and could not eat maybe half a sandwich for lunch or one waffle for breakfast.MY appetite was gone. Now I am on the 10mcg the first month was great, not much neausa no appetite and was losing weight and still am.I did have a problem with diarhea until I discoved what was causing it,anytime I ate to much of something with sugar or cooking oil in it it made me sick and I felt like I stayed in the bathroom all the time.I learned my lesson the hard way.Now I watch what I am eating and am doing good. The only problem I have developed in the last couple of day is low bloodsugar.I am thinking I may have to cut back on the metformin now.Currently taking 1000 mg.time release twice a day.

I too was on byetta and it worked great for the first 2 months. I lost 12lbs and things were going well, then it stopped working. No matter what my bs were going up and no weight loss for 3 months. My doctor took me off it for 6 months. I sure wish it kept on working, I have talked to others that have been on byetta had the same thing happen. Good luck hope it keeps on working for you.

Furball,

The main action of Byetta isn't supposed to be weight loss, rather better blood glucose numbers. My hbA1C went from over 8 to a six in 3 months. After which it stayed there or less. Unfortunately I have a new doctor and he wanted to see if I could do without it. We will have to see if I get back on it later.

I hope this helps.

Patrick,

Yawning after meals could be related to the carb load from the meal.

It seems the only time I get yawning fits is when my glucose level is too high.

I hope this helps.

Jorgie,

You may experience nausea when you go from the 5 micrograms to 10. Be sure to follow all directions. I also did my shots in the top of the thighs, the left for breakfast the right for dinner.

I hope this helps.

Roxie
I never heard of Byetta. I would love to try it. Is it a perscription I could get from my doctor? My blood sugar levels are out of control. I was 396 last week and am trying to get it down but I'm having a very hard time. I'm staying in the 225 area right know. Before I was too low dropping as low as 48, I think I got scared and started back with bad habits. I would really like to stabilze myself. The highs and lows scare me. Thanks for any input on Byetta.
Take care my T2 buddies

I started Byetta just two weeks ago and am really feeling the nausea. I've learned when to eat after taking it to minimize the nausea but still feel it. I am only on a 5mcg for another two weeks before I move to the 10mcg. Any suggestions for the nausea?

I also don't actually think it's working right now. I've been in the mid-high 200's or higher at all times. (Except today when I hit a 121!!!) They said I should have seen the results almost immediately...does this seem right?

Any thoughts would definately be appreciated!

Thanks!

Unfortunately the Doctor at the Accord study decided to put me on Metformin instead of Byetta. I ha a wild session this morning. About an hour after breakfast I took a bg reading before starting at ExerCare. Oops, the reading was 43, and we had a heck of a time getting it up again. so I'm just getting a mild change in my Lantus and we'll see what happens.

Jorgie

Type II Lantus 33 units Metformin 1000mg (Split) and 6 mg of Amaryl at noon.

Jorgie,

Actually if you get any nausea, it usually starts sfter you start on the 10 micrograms. I got it but pressed on through until my body became accustomed to the shots.

Since switching doctors, He has not started me back on the shots yet.

Interesting reactions to Byetta. At ExerCare today I had to stop early because my bg went down like a shot. Wwe hadn't lowered my Lantus yet, but have now been told to go from 33 to 28 units.

With a few more adjustments I'm sure things will be fine.

I'm having a few "problems" with Byetta, not unexpected. I feel very bloated in the evening and it takes awhile to improve. Also I'm getting lower BG readings at bedtime, but then I'm apparently snacking too much so they are high in the morning. Need to adjust that.

Interesting.
My numbers have been bouncing around a bit on Byetta, so last night I decided not to have a sanck. Much better in the am.

Also, the Accord study suggested that instead of a bowl of cereal in the morning I try a peanut butter & banana sandwich. Again, better numbers.

Amazing.

Before starting Byetta if my bg was below 200 at bedtime and I did not have a snack it would be in the 60's or 70's by morning. With Byetta if I have a snack in the evening it's in the 150's by morning.

I have been on Byetta for a little over a month now but have not seen much of a weight loss. I wonder if that could be because I'm still on Lantus. The Accord study suggested that I take a second batch at 5 units instead of going on to ten. That could be another reason. They have led me astray before.

I've never used Byetta, but I have followed simple guide lines to weight control at http://www.stayinformed.info/health/weig...

I discovered that I was gluten intolerant as well. The thing about this is that it is linked to diabetes along with MSG and Sugar. I eliminated these thing from my diet and take chromium to help. I feel great.

My doctors say it not for everyone.

As of today I am going off Byetta. My bg numbers have been going up to the point that they are ridiculous. Last night before supper it was over 300, and at bedtime it was 459. High 200's this morning. The Doctor is putting me on Novalog and my Lantus.

I was wondering if this Byetta was available in Canada?
I am currently on Metformin, and it was working for awhile, but now my sugars are going high again.
I see my doc again in Sept. but was wondering if this Byetta would be better than insulin, as this is my next step.
My doc said that up here, the new guidelines suggest insulin first before pills. Since I was able to control my sugar through diet for 8 years, he thought the Metformin was worth a try first.
If it would help a bit with weight loss as well as reducing my blood sugar, I'd give it a try.
Thanks for your time. Have a great day.
