Wet Behind The Ears
Wet Behind The Ears

I am reading some books recently published where they are saying the bottom of the food pyramid is made up of the above foods & more. When I took the diabetic classes 3 years ago, these were the things I was told not to eat. Pasta, unless it was whole wheat (yuck) was off limits. All these things are high in carbs. I am only supposed to have a total of 30 carbs per meal. How does this work. Confused!

Sommar, I agree with you on the pasta, in general, although if you add enough veggies to almost crowd the pasta out, it can be doable. But beans are nutritious and high fiber food, which I use frequently, in moderate amounts, and as with most things, along with other food. And, barley is a great high-fiber grain. Just measure portion sizes and control carbs with carb-counting as your Registered Dietician should explain to you. If your doc has not referred you to an RD, by all means, ask him to do so! And, with any food, meal or snack, it's not just the food that counts, but also what we "do" with it, and how we "use" it. Are you metabolizing the food and helping to control blood sugar with exercise? That's been my method of control for 9 years. It works. Food makes blood sugar go up, and exercise makes it come down. Once you find the proper balance, you should be able to eat just about anything, within reason. Making certain foods "off-limits" was the old-school advice. The current method is well-balanced, low fat, high fiber diet, correct portion sizes, and carb-counting. You don't have to be afraid of carbs, but need to know what to do with them and when. (I hope this helps -- I see this post has been here for a while, so if anyone else wants to join in the conversation, please do!)
