Hi. I would suggest that you look at the Recipe Exchange board, which is just above this one. Also, if you post to the Type 2 Diabetes board, you will be more likely to get some responses, because there are more people who look at that board.Without knowing what your grandfather is eating now, it is difficult to make suggestions. It is also important to know if he has other health problems and how well he is controlling his diabetes right now. But here are some general suggestions. Whole grain breads are better than white breads, and lean meats are better than those high in fat. Green vegetables are better than starchy vegetables. He should avoid foods that have a lot of sugar. I really do think that looking at the recipes on this site will help you. Good luck. Becky

Hello Granddaughter; Lucky gradfather to have you helping. Has he seen a dietician yet? Maybe he should ask his doctor to schedule an appointment. That would be a good start. There are also a couple of books, Diabetic Cooking for Dummies and Diabetics for Dummies. There are some good guidelines there that might help get him started. Again, without knowing what his specific needs are, it would be difficult to advise something more specific. Can't go too wrong with fresh veggies and fruit, but count calories and carbs for his needs. Don't forget that fruit is weighed with peels, skin, seeds, etc. For example, an apple should be 4oz unpeeled and uncored for a serving of 60 calories and 15 carbs. Use skim milk or low fat, and if he must eat cheeses, keep them low fat as well. Butter is not good, and needless to say, neither are foods with high concentrates of sugar. Seafood and poultry are good food choices. Stay away from fried foods. Read food labels. There's so much to know, but everyone has differnt needs. One person may be able to eat cereals and rice with no problem, but the next person may not be able to eat them. He needs to test regularly to see what effects different foods and quanities will have on his BS. It's all a bit intimidating at first. Hope this helps. Good luck.

This is all wonderful stuff. My grandfather is also diabetic and when I go home (I live 2 1/2 hours away from him) I like to cook for him and give my grandmother a break. Thankfully, she keeps tons of food in the house that is good for him to eat. Otherwise, he'll just eat whatever - he also has dementia and forgets that he has just eaten, so he'll start snacking - and then he has to go the hospital because his blood sugar is all out of whack. I'm wondering, though, since some of the stuff I've been reading indicates that diabetes is genetic, should I go on a prevention type of diet? Or is that not necessary?
